Ongoing Research

Zymes is currently conducting the following research programs:

  • Modifications of naturally occurring coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): Zymes sponsors a Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara whose research is focused on answering the question: Did nature choose wisely? This program has achieved the first synthesis of new quinone modified analogs of naturally occurring coenzyme Q10. We are currently in the process of comparing the functionalities of these new compounds.
  • New delivery technologies: Zymes sponsors a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara whose research is focused on developing additional delivery systems, which may serve specific functions such as targeting the delivery of drugs to specific organs affected by particular disease states.
  • Bioavailability of Zymes’ water soluble formulations: Studies demonstrating the bioavailability of our water-soluble formulations of bioactive ingredients are ongoing. We have established in animal models that coenzyme Q10, DHA, and resveratrol all have bioavailability equivalent to established products in the marketplace. However, the Zymes product has the aqueous advantage in that these ingredients can be delivered in liquid products such as enhanced waters, sports drinks and other foods and beverages!
  • Reversal of toxicity due to HIV/AIDS drugs: Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are essential medications for effective antiretroviral therapy of HIV/AIDS. However, they cause nerve toxicity through damage to the cell’s mitochondria. Zymes, in collaboration with The Burnet Institute, Australia’s largest virology and communicable disease research institute, sponsored research to determine the efficacy of Ubisol-Aqua™: coenzyme Q10 in preventing this nerve damage in cell culture models of the disorder. Zymes’ water-soluble coenzyme Q10 had significant benefits in this model of HIV drug-induced neuropathy.
  • Green Chemistry: In an effort to reduce the impact of synthetic chemistry on the environment, Zymes is focused on using our proprietary technology to keep organic solvents out of many of the “name” reactions that are of most common utility in process research. There are thousands of such reactions in organic chemistry, many of which use organic solvents because the substrates are insoluble in water. The Ubisol-Aqua™ platform has been shown to enable the unprecedented use of water as a reaction solvent for several commercially relevant chemical processes. With Ubisol-Aqua™, these reactions take place in water as the only solvent, at room temperature, obviating the need for organic solvents and, oftentimes heat - both of which have significant environmental impact. Studies are ongoing to expand the range of applicability for this important process.
